I am fixing up my father in laws (FILs) '97 Jeep Wrangler to get it ready to sell. After his heart attack, its not something that he needs anymore.
So I was unfamliar with this beast. As I find problems and search for info on the web, I find that there are Jeep BB's all over the web. These are very fragmented and many messages are not responded to because there is a lack of critical mass of 'members' to make the whole thing work. BB's are really a social interaction, and there are lots of partie to go to, but if no one is there, its not much fun. So for Jeep, the BB's really are quite useless. There may some decent ones out there, but its a needle in a hay stack perhaps.
So this has made me better understand the value of Saabnet. It has a critical mass that is essential for success and effectiveness, and it has the requisite number of gear heads who like to live and breath such things. Fragmentation of a vehicles traffic across many small BB's is really a recipe for ineffectiveness.
Other joys: On the 2.5L 4cyl engine, the oil filter is between the starter and an engine mount. It is very awkward to remove, but perhaps easy on a lift instead of on one's back. But you do not have to jack the beast up to change the oil. So one needs to use a filter wrench or such to remove the filter. But guess whats there, the exposed +12V starter solenoid battery cable mount stud is right there. Hit that with a metal filter wrench and there will be h3ll to pay! So that is a definate safety issue.
Another fun job was to replace the rad, cap and T-stat. Someone had replaced the 195F stat with a 160F stat, and crippled the rad-cap seal ring to make sure that it would not hold any pressure. (There is an overflow bottle.) And the rad cap one way vavle spring was missing. The cold t-stat made sure that things would not boil over with no pressure. Motivation? The rad may have been leaking with the pressures of a stock setup. Some stupid used car trick I guess. The plastic rad top tank appears to have had the pressure sealing suface ground out to cripple the development of pressure. No repairing, so got a new all metal copper/brass two row rad from radiator barn.com for $127 delivered. Made off-shore of course. That was easy to install.
The Jeep has such a high drag ratio, that the top speed is around 75-80 MPH. Perhaps with the 195F t-stat, there will be a bit more power. MPGs also suck, and the cold engine temps may have been messing up the mixture and reducing engine efficiency.
I will be glad when this thing is gone!
