Hey there,

I fly planes as well, and in my prime was holding down a commercial licence with multi IFR. Since then, probably like most people, I have left the cockpit behind due to the prohibitive cost of it all. Especially multi... at $250/hr (Canadian $) it just doesn't make financial sense. I started when I was 14. I'm 24 now, and have somewhere around 750 hours at last check. The bulk of those coming from a variety of jobs, including flying skydivers (in a C182), aerial photography (C152), and working for this French-Canadian gentleman who owned a construction company and needed someone to fly his Seneca II to a bunch of his sites across Ontario and Quebec.

I never did fly a Tomahawk, rather started in a C152, then C172, up to a Seneca for multi, and then a bunch of other planes along the way. My favourite of the bunch was a Turbo Arrow III. Fast, efficient, and ability to cruise at 19000 feet was a blast. I flew a Warrior a couple times, and enjoyed it, athought compared with the Arrow, it was rather lathargic. Would highly recommend a C172 though. They practically fly themselves, and are great confidence builders, as you don't need to be bang on every time when landing.

It was always my dream to be a pilot, and I somewhat blame the events of 9/11, as I was hitting "peak form" right at that time, and it was really all downhill from there. Aviation as a whole is on the path to recovery, but since I was finishing university at that time (engineering degree), it simply made more sense to get a steady job then to pack up, go up north, and fly Beavers or C185s until sometime next decade.

Best of luck with it all. Would suggest going for IFR. That's flying at its best. Very technical, challenging, and when bursting out of the clouds at 200 feet, very rewarding.
