When our over-priced, bankrupt air-purification company folded up its tent (and reopened it under another name), we couldn't get their over-priced filters. When we turned on the A/C, it froze up big time. I opened it up and found that we could have grown potatoes (or however you spell them) in the filter accumulation of the 4-month old filter we had in there.
After I found some filters that only needed minor mods to fit, and installed them, no more freeze-ups.
This doesn't discount the possibility that you may also need a recharge or a new expansion valve, but it's another (and inexpensive) thing to look at.
