I always say to people.. Posted by AMG [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: I don't know but we did..., Scott Paterson ![]() ![]() |
I always say two things to clients, many of which are scraping by as students...
1. if your PB is used all day, every day, on the road (in class), then ACARE is a very good bet. Chances are you'll need a new AC adapter, battery, KBD, and Optical or hard drive within 3 years if you're a road user.
2. If you have the money for ACARE now but will have trouble paying for new AC adapters ($80) or say an optical drive replacement ($200) or keyboard ($110) when and if they fail, then you may as well spend the money now.
Other than that, ACARE is usually not worth it IMHO. For $349 it isn't even an insurance policy, it doesn't cover accidental damage and that is the most common damage that occurs. It also doesn't cover you if you shatter the screen, which is the most expensive thing you can break in most cases.
With a notebook you're looking to insure against two $$ things: logic board, and screen failure. If either of these fail out of warranty, you'll wish you bought ACARE. Those failures are a rare occurrence however, it's far more common for people to spill liquids and ruin the logic board or shatter the screen, neither of which are covered.
I would stay away from ACARE personally, however if money was no object, I'd buy it because extending the warranty does have a certain value. Just not quite $349 in my current economic mindspace. If it were $249 I'd say buy it because thats one optical or hard drive failure and a keyboard or AC adapter. It's that extra $100 that is the question. Good Luck -AMG
