I am using this tool to drive 2-inch screws thru 5/8-inch pressure treated fence pickets into pressure treated Southern Yellow Pine (hard as nails) 2x4's.
The model I bought lists the 2-inch screw as the maximum size it can accomodate. After driving another 150+ screws tonight, I believe my problem is caused by the super hard 2x4's, and the speed of the tool (RPM's too high), and using the maximum length screws. Whenever I would encounter a slightly pithier 2x4, it seemed to work pretty good.
All systems work when power is off, it just won't advance the screw all the way into the board. The screws spins free in the wood and the friction causes wisps of smoke. My less powerful, but slower turning, 9.6 volt drill/driver has no difficulty sinking the screws all the way in.
I am beginning to suspect these were designed to install drywall on metal and untreated wood studs. Using them on treated lumber is slightly beyond their capacity.
