It's great for starting out from a stop or on a hill. It does give a more secure feeling under bad traction conditions, especially for drivers who are nervous or unskilled in snow.
But beyond that there is little advantage. My wife puts her Exploder into Auto mode in snow--but it only kicks into AWD mode if it needs to. And it usually doesn't, except on slick surfaces at intersections and sometimes on our uphill driveway.
