Review for a 1999 Toyota Camry from the Cartalk website. I found the comments about style amusing and the complaints about dealer service intriguing.
What is there not to love in the Toyota Camry? Pick a year...any year. Quintessentially reliable, economical, practical, roomy and yes, even stylish (well, at least compared to any Volvo or Saab!) I keep looking for flaws that would entice me to change my preference for the main workhorse vehicle we own, but for the life of me cannot find any. The only down side I can come up with is dealer service. To say "it sucks" is a high compliment. They rarely fix anything satisfactorily (thank God not much ever needs repairs), but if it ever does...watch out. You will, more often than not, be gouged and treated like the automotive ignoramus you probably are!! Our other car is a Lexus ES300 purchased about 6 weeks ago, primarily to test their highly regarded dealer service reputation. Only put 500 miles so far, and if Toyota reliability is any indication, it will probably be years and years, if ever that we establish a recurring intimate relationship with their service dept. For the money, run, do not walk and buy a Camry (4 about as good as 6 cylinder 99% of the time). And don't stress over not being able to afford a new one. You have excellent odds that your used one will be a winner as well. But remember, start looking for an independent mechanic ASAP should you ever require repairs. Just make sure he uses only genuine Toyota parts.
