Gotta chime in here because, like many of you, I'm a little bitter about the price of gas. Oh, don't come and cry, "it's WAY more expensive in other countries!" I don't want them to pay more but, honestly, it doesn't matter what THEY are paying for gas. I'm concerned about what I'M paying. And it ain't pretty.

Here's why the price of gas/oil is different than the price of, say, a pack of gum. Pretty much EVERYTHING here needs to be shipped in some way shape or form to get it somewhere to sell. Well, when it costs twice as much to ship something I've got to raise the price on my goods to cover the increased transportation costs. This, in turn, means prices on goods (in general) rise. Last time I checked, we called this sort of thing INFLATION and it's just plain bad for any economy.

We HAVE to use fuel for some many things, which is why the price of gas is so important. I don't HAVE to chew gum so if gum were $50 a pack, I just wouldn't buy it. I still have to get to work so I've got to pay my $3.00+ per gallon to get there. My costs go up, I have less money to buy the more expensive goods. Well, I think you see where I'm going here. It's just nasty for an economy which still hasn't fully recovered from our last problem.

So, this is exactly why the government must step in and deal with the situation. I don't know how (not my job anyway) but they need to do something to make it look like they give a shit about us little people. The oil companies are profiting on someone else's loss right now. This, in its most basic sense, is price gouging. No matter how you look at it, that's what it is. The government has stepped in and fixed prices during times of other disasters in the past so I know they can do it.

Also, why is it, when oil goes up in price, we seem to see a price increase on gas within days. Yet, when it goes down, they tell us there's a 90-day supply and it'll take longer to realize price decreases? Basically, the oil companies LOVE it when they can charge this. They're making record profits and will continue to do so while oil is expensive. Oh, guess how our current president was elected and made a lot of his money. So, do you think he's gonna step up and bite the hand that feeds him? And no, this isn't a Bush/Kerry thing nor am I just bashing Bush. If I were in his situation I'd do the same thing...well, maybe I wouldn't take as many vacations as he does... ;)
