Saab questions from a wannabee Saab owner

Hi all,
I have a few questions for some of you well versed in Saabs
I really want to buy a Saab, and I found a very affordable one(having a baby, must sell toyota p/u, don't want to spend alot), and I had it checked out by Saab Dealers/Diritio Bros. in Walnut Creek....and there are a couple of issues that I have with the condition.
First it is a 96 900s hatchback...buying for $3900 with 100k
Conscientious owner has garage kept, replaced clutch last year
Problem, engine light was on and it did not pass smog first time around, then later passed smog when a mechanic did something with the hoses.
Dealer said 96-98's can sometimes have issues with this and require some register monitor work...does anyone have any experience with this?
Should I worry or just take it to a disreputable person to get it smogged and leave it at that? The engine light is off, but subsequently she had it fixed and it came back on again.
Also it appears to be spray a little oil around one of the clamps. My husband look at it and thought it prob. wasn't anything.
But the dealer says we would have to get it steamed cleaned before they would determine where it is coming from.....
Alas, I really want this car, but is it too old with too many issues to take on. I really need some good advice if I can find it...Just don't want to force my wanting a Saab if it is going to cost me a lot of $ later.
Thanks
