When my Saab hybrid isn't enough

Last summer I threw my bike in the back of my '90 900 & drove 2/3 of the way to work (20 mi), then parked & rode my bike the remaining 1/3 (12 mi). (That's the "hybrid" part.) I did this enough to save 1,200 mi from my car over the 4 mos of summer (mid-May to mid-Sept), resulting in saving 40 gals of gas & losing 10 lbs of excess weight. I've tried to repeat that this summer, but have only managed about 800-900 mi so far.
But, with the recent skyrocketing of gas prices, increasing my mpg by 50% isn't enough. I want more than a measly 45 mpg. And with winter & the end of Daylight Savings Time approaching, riding my bike is becoming less fun.
A friend at work is selling off an old scooter, & she said I could give it a try. I rode it in one day last week for the entire 65 mi commute, plus errands at lunch. What a blast that was! It's an '82 Honda Passport with only a 70cc single cylinder 4-stroke engine. (So its gas savings are huge but its pollution output is small.) I drove it about 75-80 mi that day & it wouldn't even take 3/4 of a gal of gas to refill, giving me better than 100 mpg! And it's fun!
The downsides are that it only goes 45 mph & I don't get much of a workout riding it. But it only took me an extra 10 minutes to get to work, proving that traffic (not lack of horsepower) is the worst part of my commute. I wouldn't start out in the morning on it if the weather was already bad, but, since it has full fenders & a windscreen, I can handle getting unexpectedly caught in a cold rain. It's old. It's unusual. It needs work. It has racks but no baskets. It pollutes less & saves more. It's a big grin. I think I'm going to buy it.
