Now what to do with my amplifier? Posted by Rod [Email] (#3128) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Rod) on Thu, 15 Sep 2005 14:18:06 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I posted a while ago about the bad volume control on my old Arcam Alpha amplifier (see link below). I took the advice offered and contacted Arcam in the US. Eventually I found out that the volume control potentiometers are totally out of stock except for one in a New Jersey repair shop that they will not sell to me separately. They'll accept my amp for repair but it is likely to cost me $75 plus two way shipping so a $5 part is going to cost me $100. It is an older amp and probably not even worth $100.
My thought is to replace it with whatever potentiometer comes reasonably close to the original in terms of resistance and physical size. I am assuming the only real difference might be the linearity of the response as the volume control is turned. Is that correct or are there other issues that might make the whole thing sound like crap?? I can solder in a new pot, but don't know much about hifi electronics.
Thanks
Rod
