Thanks everyone for the great responses. Here in the flat midwest (Ohio) the skiing is not great, even in winter. I checked Snowbird's web site and it says they don't open for snow until mid-November, which is pretty much what every other resort in the west says. My situation is I'm about to have a career change and in two weeks I'm taking a week off in between jobs. I was hoping I could find skiing somewhere in the US but it doesn't look promising.

I think instead I'm going to do a bunch of my other new hobby which is mountain biking. At the ripe old age of 38 I've really been bitten by this bug. I am fortunate to live 10 minutes from a very good and challenging state park trail here in Ohio. If I did a ski trip I was going to use frequent flyer miles and frequent guest hotel points to travel and stay for free, then rent a car. I guess if I do a mountain biking trip in Ohio I can still use hotel points and just pay for my gas. I'm going to have to get my old P.O.S. trunk rack fitted onto my Saab convertible so I don't have to take my gas guzzler SUV on this trip!
