Whata drag!

Yesterday myself and my wife shared the drive from NYC to boston and back. We drove through the rain storm at a moderate 55/65 mph, with the ecception of SUV's everybody was doing the same. So here is my query, the SID told us that we were getting about 30/31 mpg which was okay but last week in clear and dry weather I drove the same road at the same speed and received an astonashing 36 almost 37 mpg, would the water drag contribute to this difference? I also noticed that on autopilot the mpg's went down slightly and I feel that this is because the cruise control cannot actually see the road ahead and anticipate, but only react to immediate road veriations.
If this is the case then Imagine those fast moving SUV's with their knobbly tires and their fuel/milage degredation!
Have a great weekend.
