Hi everyone, I sent out the below e-mail to everyone in my company and figured I would try to solicit some donations here as well. I hope it's OK to solicit for a good cause...
__
I would like to make you aware of a horrific disease and ask for your help in fighting it. My father was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) in late 2004. He is a man with a love of life that is unparalleled - he was always very active, doing things such as bike riding, playing tennis, skiing, paragliding, hiking, and windsurfing. Thankfully, he is still mobile, however, each month that goes by things become a little more difficult. This disease has been especially difficult for my father because of his love of activities that involved pushing himself physically. This upcoming Saturday, October 15th, I will participate in a walkathon in Purchase, NY, to benefit Project ALS. Last year's walkathon had over 400 participants and raised over $140,000.

You can learn more about Project ALS and the disease at the following link:
http://www.projectals.org/

You can learn more about the walk itself at this link: http://www.projectalswalk.com/

Any donation would be greatly appreciated. You can make donations directly through the the Project ALS website at the following link:
http://www.projectals.org/donate.shtml
Or via phone at (800) 603-0270

When you proceed to the Paypal screen, you can enter my name (Nick Reuter) in the Payment For box so that they will attribute the funds to my walk.

Again, any donation at all would be appreciated more than my words can explain. Watching someone you love go through such a terrible event is truly wrenching, and I promised my father and all those who are going through this that I will do what I can to help. Thank you very much for your generosity. If you know anyone else who would be interested in contributing, it would mean the world to me if you could forward this on to them as well.

Thanks again,

Nick Reuter
Boston

What is ALS?

ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, attacks the body's motor neurons, or nerve cells, and proves fatal within an average of two to five years. As motor neurons are destroyed, a person with ALS loses his or her ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. Unless we do something, 300,000 seemingly healthy Americans living now will die from ALS. It is a fact that, if we solve the mystery of ALS, we will learn what we need to know about other devastating brain diseases including Alzheimers, Parkinsons and Huntingtons, which afflict over six million people. To date, there exists not one effective treatment to improve the lifestyle of someone with ALS. Project A.L.S. is working to find and fund treatments and a cure for a disease that has been stamped untreatable for almost 150 years.

Project A.L.S. is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to:

Finding a cure for A.L.S.
Finding an effective treatment for people living with A.L.S.
Raising awareness about A.L.S.

Since its founding, in 1997, Project A.L.S. has raised over $23 million. Over 83% of the money we raise goes directly to funding for our historic research programs. Current cutting-edge projects include:

Gene Chip Discovery
Accelerated Drug Testing
Neural Stem Cell Replacement
Project A.L.S. has assembled a dream team of leading doctors and researchers from around the world who are committed to our goal of bringing swift and responsible science to the fight against ALS.

In only a few short years, this unprecedented collaboration has produced historic breakthroughs into our understanding of ALS. If successful, our current research will make a difference to those living with ALS as well as related neurological disorders such as Alzheimers, Parkinsons, Multiple Sclerosis and spinal cord injuries.

Partners with Project A.L.S. include scientists at Yale University, Cornell University, The Salk Institute, Harvard Medical School, Johns Hopkins University, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at Columbia University and the University of California, San Francisco among others.
