A digital camera gets a lot more use as a display medium than a camera. You only take the picture once, but you view it many times, so I suggest an extra large screen. The Canons Digital Elphs are great and I heard they make a "450" now with the huge screen. Often with the huge screen there's no room for the optical viewfinder. Optical viewfinders are useful in bright light where you can't see the screen, but the new screens are so bright that it makes the optical view finder really unnecessary.

My wife went to Costco to get the Pentax Optio with the huge screen, but they were out of stock and she brought home the Pentax Optio WP. It has a 2" screen, big but not huge, and no fragile lens barrell sliding in and out of the camera so it's waterproof to 5 ft. Great for surf, swim and snorkle pictures and without the sliding lens barrell, and sealed against the elements, it should be very, very sturdy. As I'm a surfer, snorkeler (soon on the Great Barrier Reef!) and general ham handed fella', I kinda' Like it. It's a skosh longer than the Canons, maybe a touch thinner, but definitely pocket size.

BTW the sommon "SD" memory cards come in a 1 gig size, that's 800+ pics at 3 mega pixels, wow! I was also able to find an Eveready battery in the right size, an extra memory card and battery are essential accessories.
