Spybot S&D work great for me when called upon to clean out my family's and friends' computers (ah, the joys of coming home from college on the weekends ;)
Others here have posted great advice:
- Avoid using IE (Netscape, Mozilla, and Firefox are equally safe here, as they are based on the same code. Since Opera is free now, it is also an excellent browser choice)
- Avoid shady shareware and p2p apps
- Use a combination of cleaning tools. Spybot S&D is free, updated often, and quite comprehensive. Using a firewall (ZoneAlarm, etc.) is a good idea too.
- Up-to-date anti-virus software goes a long way, too. I recommend AVG Anti-Virus Free edition for a comprehensive and up-to-date free solution.
