This is exactly why I would never move to L.A., or the Bay Area. What good is great weather (which I can afford to travel to any time I want because I live in the cheaper midwest), when you can't afford to have reasonable living accommodations, often waste your life (and gas) away stuck in traffic, and can't save for the future? Most people spend their leisure time doing similar things no matter where they live, going out to eat, movies, bars/lounges, shopping, seasonal outdoor activities, and as long as you're in a major metro area, there should be enough of these to go to. I live near lots of ethnic restaurants which are important to me.
Sure, I would be living in a "cooler" city, and the social scene would (presumably) be better, but I like the change of season here, and we appreciate nice days more. People here are genuine and mostly friendly. Plus, we have no major (knock on wood) earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, just snow storms which I kind of like. I am within driving distance of Chicago, Toronto, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for outdoor recreation. We actually have some pretty good mountain biking trails here too.
Although I would rather live in the less expensive Cleveland area where I grew up, but jobs seem to be scarce there. I don't make 6-figures, yet I have a 3 bedroom 1,700 sq ft home, with a 2-car garage (for the two cars I can afford to keep), and a nice-sized yard for quite a bit under $250K, located in a "trendy" suburb. My house may not increase in value so much, but what good is an increase in value on paper? It increases your taxes, and you need somewhere else to live once you cash out the of the home you're in. Unless you move to a cheaper city or move into a smaller home, the next one will likely be more expensive.
