My brother-in-law repeated this story to me again last night when he saw my Saab, I have forgotten to post it previously.
A couple of years ago he was deer hunting in Michigan's Upper Peninsula with his brother and other friends. He and his brother were driving on one of the two-lane highways following a lady driving a Saab, he doesn't know which model. She drifted off onto the shoulder of the road and struck a pile of sand the Highway Crews had deposited for use later in the winter on icey roads. Unfortunately, the sand had frozen solid in the cold weather and travel speeds on that road are routinely 70mph.
She hit the sloping pile of sand with her right front tire and the frozen sand acted just like a ramp used by demolition driving exhibitions. Her Saab became completely airborn, barrel rolled 360 degrees while in the air, landed on its wheels, bounced 3 to 4 feet into the air, then landed a second time.
My brother-in-law and his brother, both professional mechanics - although not on Saabs, immediately stopped their pick-up truck and ran to assist. The driver was white as a ghost and completely frightened. They assisted her, then turned to the car.
One tire had blown out on impact with the ground. No fluids were leaking, no springs or other suspension parts were visibly damaged, all doors opened properly. They were stunned.
They installed the Saab's spare tire on the car, restarted it looking for any evidence of damage, inspected the car as well as they could with their training but not many tools, and found nothing wrong with it!
The lady thanked them, and drove away with my brother-in-law and his brother following in their pick-up in case anything else happened.
My brother-inlaw's closing comment, "Damn, those are a well built car!"
True story.
