...and they smell like Ozone. I know from personal experience. I used to surf. Best waves occur near storms and when hurricanes are out at sea. One day we thought it was just a rain storm and we went out. I felt the hackles at the back of my neck stand up. My buddies felt it too, and we all hit the deck on our boards. A loud piercing crack followed by steam royled up from the ocean about 50 feet away, maybe less, maybe more. The strike hit the high point of a wave, so had we been standing, it might have hit us instead. It was like the water actually cracked before it exploded. It was followed by a strong odor of clean ozone.
We learned our lesson, sorta'. We surfed hurricane tides but stopped going out during storms.
If you heard to crack of loud piercing sound, then it is less likely that you were struck. The sound is like 120 decibles loud, and really piercing. The odor you describe is more like fire and less like lightning ozone.
