I usually take drives out of their cases and mount them internally on an older G4 with ATA bus. Sometimes that makes all the difference itself. A lot of problems stem from the external case having bad power or a flaky interface board. This often makes a drive accessible to a utility that previously didn't want to handle it. I can't recommend this step enough.
If the problem is logical, not physical, then Alsoft's Diskwarrior is damn helpful at rebuilding damaged directories. You can (and should) use the Preview feature and backup your files from the Preview, instead of actually replacing the directory (which might contain only part of your data)
This allows you to attempt recovery without actually changing things on the disk, in case such a change would destroy the data you're after.
If the problem is bad sectors, diskwarrior may or may not help. There's also Prosoft's Data Rescue 2, which can be more robust, I usually try it second.
I use both at work, with pretty good success, but you should be careful.
You can easily do things with this software that will render your data even more inaccessible. If the data is of $ value, please consider a professional recovery. There are some tricky aspects to consider. I recommend reading up on what you plan to do before you do it.
And make sure you have another mounted drive to backup files to when you attempt recovery. (if you're running the utilities from CD that is). Good Luck-AMG
