"What percentage of fossil fuel consumption could realistically be replaced with ethanol?"
Zero. It requires more energy to produce the fuel from agricultural crops than the fuel contains. In other words, for every gallon of ethanol you make, you used up more than one gallon of fossil fuels. Without fossil fuels, ethanol production cannot happen. Use of ethanol is actually speeding our depletion of oil reserves.
