I am from the west. You should try for a west coast car for several good reasons. Car in cold climates tend to be more "used" because of the reasons you think, and the cold weather. You should look for a car that is in a mild climate, like California. Gernerally speaking, Califfornia cars last longer, since they don't have the extremes you would find in say, Buffalo, (cold) or Tampa (Hot).. If you doubt that, check in any old car magazine. More California cars survive into their 50's and 60's, since they don't rust out, the sun isn't as intense, less acid rain, more moderate climate, etc. etc.
IMHO, cold weather is a car killer... I remember getting into a car one morning when it was 20 below 0. As I sat down, the vinyl seat cracked in about 10 places...
