We had two wireless phones with dead call id displays, another that has short battery life and a unit with a tape message machine that died, so we are tossing the lot and got a new system. We run a small business out of the home office and had to do something fast after the answering machine died.

The Vtech i5871 base unit has a digital message machine and a wireless handset. It is a 5.8GHz system, which will not interfere with WiFi. The base unit connects to a phone wire. We added 4 wireless remotes, which can be anywhere that power can be found and they do not plug into the phone jacks.

The base unit and the remote handset cradles are very compact, hold the phone handset vertical and take up very little desk/table space.

The 5 handsets have 65K color displays. You can name them, give them unique wall paper, upload picture, ring tones or record your own ring tones from any source you want. You can assign ring tones and pictures to phone numbers in phone directory that you enter manually or upload from a PC. With the lot we got 5 audio patch cords for recording ring tone soungs, 5 USB cables, 5 CDs, 5 belt clips .... more techo junk! ;-)

These work very well and the audio clarity is very good. The audio quality of the ring tones is really good. They are slim, but full length, so the mike is at your mouth that reduces background noise to the people that you call.

You can intercom from one phone to another by picking its name or ring all stations. You can have 8 handsets max.

Get and add one battery for the handsets into the base unit cradle and the whole system (five handsets in our case) will work during a power outage for a couple of hours.

We are very pleased so far. Only complaint is that the phone book uplink replaces, does not merge, but we are familiar with that from doing such things to cell phones. But one issue is that such an upload does break the assignments of ringtones and pictures to any prior phone numbers.

Prices are all over map on the net, but we saves big $$$ at samsclub.com. Sams Club retail does not carry these. Shipping was $8. The expansion handsets are model i5808.

Yes, you can get some somewhat similar systems cheaper.

You will not get far on http://www.vtech.com unless you are using internet explorer :(
