What kind of car? What kind of auction? Are you talking like one of the dealer sponsored "auctions," a factory/bank auction, or like an insurance/salvage auction?
Honestly, you may save some money, but probably not much. After you deal with the hassle of registering, smogging, delivery, buyer fees, etc. you're gonna save a few bucks but not much more. IMHO, you are far better off striking a deal with someone who attends these things - tell them what you want and what you want to pay, and they'll find a car for a fixed fee. If you don't mind a little travel, I'd personally talk to Al Baston (formerly the Saabfarm, now 9motors) and get his opinion. IME he's an honest, forthright guy, and this is his business...
