benchmarks I would suggest:
4% Money Market rate from Emigrant Direct, highest (taxable) rate you can get in the US.
6.75% for I Bonds from Treasury Direct (see their site for restrictions on early withdrawal etc.) but I think this is an excellent rate.
The above two rates are close to risk free rates, nothing is risk free in my book, including US Treasury.
You can also use the usual benchmarks, S&P 500 for large stocks and the corresponding broader benchmarks for total market, mid-cap, or small-cap stocks, such as Russell 2000, Wilshire 5000,.....
I don't know your risk preference or what your financial goals or whether you have a family, kids, Saabs, pets......
If you have done 10% (before tax) or better then I say you are doing a reasonable job. If you have done 20%, I would like to know what you did 8-).
