There is some great advice on this post. The most important is looking at which hospital and surgeons mortality rates. Also find out if minimally invasive surgery is an option. I work at a large teaching hospital in the West Coast and have experience with patients undergoing open heart surgery. Undoubtedly the hardest part for the family is seeing their loved one in ICU immediately post op.....this is very scary. For your mother the next day will be the hardest as all the tubes and lines come out and she will be sat in a chair. This may seem cruel but has been shown to dramatically reduce post op complications. Most patients do really well and feel much better after 4-6 weeks as the sternum heals. I am sure your mother will be fine.
