Help on "Re-Zeroing" my Hard Drive (long) Posted by Wil W [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Hi, I have done this before with the help from Gateway Tech Support, but that was 5 yrs ago and I can't remember the commands. I have 2 laptops & a desktop that are 6-9 yrs old and I would like to clean them out and reinstall fresh operating systems and software.
One machine is a Dell, the other two are Gateways. I have been running Windows 98SE (need to run some old programs) on one, and Win2000 Pro on the other two. My primary machine (used 95% of the time) is running WinXP so the other three are used as a spare, for surfing, and some work when I don't want to go get my primary machine. Anyway, I would like to set-up a home network once I have the machines cleaned and re-built.
Anyone know how to do this or a site that gives me instructions on re-zeroing my hard drives? From what I remember, I need to boot my machine with a "bootable floppy" and then type a DOS command to re-zero the drive (more that just >format c:). Once completed, I reboot with the floppy and then start installing the Operating system from there.
Any help would be appreciated, once I'm done with this, then I'll figure out how to set up my network. I am currently using Qwest DSL and their Actiontec wireless modem, and would like to set up a network printer for my home.
Thanks for you help as always.
