humidifier fix/electronic component id?

my old portable humidifier broke; rather than listen to my gf's incessant pleas to throw it out and buy a new one, i'm attempting a fix. it's a prob with the heater element, which of course isn't made anymore. the element, which works fine, doesn't stay on long enough. between the two element leads there's some type of safety 'switch'. i'm not sure whether it measures heat (likely), current, or what, but it only stays on for a few seconds, then shuts off. if i short the switch, the humidifier works fine (but not enough to risk burning my house down). the switch is a small gray cylindrical pellet, and appears to be made of some compressed carbon particle stuff. when it's closed, there's no voltage across, and no resistance. open, there's between 1.5k-->infinite resistance, which fluctuates rhythmically. any idea what this is, and if it can be replaced? yes, i'm neglecting to do many things this weekend that are better uses of my time...
