A couple of years ago I took some students to a conference, and this extremely smart 21 year old remarked that she wanted to buy the biggest car she could buy so she'd be "safe." So I explained to her about braking distances, traction, safe construction techniques, etc.etc. ANd she responded with "Yeah, I see what you're saying, but I'd rather have something big so I'd FEEL safe." Actual safety had nothing to do with it; perceptions of safety were everything. I've heard car salespersons make the same claims. So those people may wind up in the median, but they feel safe while they're crashing.
