Back in the day in the late 90's I test drove a 318ti. It was a fun car, if a bit underpowered. I was interested, but a few things put me off:
1. Rear wheel drive wasn't a great option for me as I spent most of my time in Michigan and Minnesota at the time.
2. This car was too damned expensive. The base price wasn't that bad, but after you added a few options and still had a relatively underpowered car for a lot of money, it wasn't very attractive. I drove this back to back with a VW Golf VR6 and the time and the difference was night and day, both in terms of equipment level and speed. Still it was a neat little car.
3. the seats didn't go down all that far when you flipped them forward and there wasn't really all that much room. About as much room as an Acura Integra of the day when you flipped the seats forward.
A year later when the oil plug dropped out the bottom of my '92 Civic Si (158K miles) cruising north on I-75 (a whole different story), I decided to buy a '99 9-3. I had driven a '98 900T Coupe the year before and really disliked the clutch take-up. 9-3 base was a lot better plus it came as a 5 door, cost less and came with cloth heated seats and a sun roof (all I wanted for options). Its at 152K miles now. I hope I don't drop the oil plug on this one in another 6000 miles.
