Flood Damaged Vehicles Posted by Tom G [Email] ![]() ![]() |
For anyone thinking of buying a used car, I found a link to NICB, National Insurance Crime Bureau. To help combat hurricane vehicle fraud, the NCIB has a free VIN search. Although not 100% foolproof, it is another tool that can be used by shoppers to see if a car is listed in the data base as having suffered damage by Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma.
It is still possible for unscrupulous sellers to "wash" a title on a vehicle that has suffered flood damage. The car can be registered in a state that doensn't recognize salavge or flood loss, thus the flood loss title declaration from the originating state is "washed" clearing the damage from the title.
Several states, Texas, Florida, and North Carolina, to name a few, also have links to allow free VIN lookup.
The NICB link "http://www.nicb.org/".
Just so you know, I haven't been burned and I'm not selling or buying any cars. I just wanted to provide some useful info I came across during my wanderings on the "net" and thought I share it with fellow SAAB enthusiasts.
