oil question, not Saab specific

Many cars today specify 5w30. I have a 96 Monte Carlo that I have never used pure 5w30 in (no idea what it had for the first 90K). I usually use 10w30, 10w40, or some combination, all dyno, every 3K. Occasionally it gets a little 5w30 mixed in as well. It has about 150k on it and as I understand things, you should use slightly thicker oil as the car ages since things get a little looser. This would indicate that 5w30 is bad in a high mileage vehicle. One might choose something a little thinner in the winter and a little thicker in the summer. I got into a debate the other day as to whether the slightly thicker oil wears the pumps out.
Does it really matter at all whether I put in 5w30, 10w30, or 10w40 in a Chevy that has lived this long? I must be doing something right.
