The CPO warranty is a no hassle warranty. Most aftermarket warranties are not bumper to bumper and require fun things like pre-certification for repairs and the inevitable 'it ain't covered.'

$2K seems a bit steep - see if you can find a better deal at a different dealer. Yes, it may mean a longer drive, but how far would you drive to save $500? And once the car is CPO, you can get it fixed at any dealer under the CPO.

There are some tricks to the CPO. Yes, it is only an additional two years. But it can be less. The CPO is, I believe, 6 years from in-service date, or 100K miles, whichever comes first. The in-service date of a car can vary by more than a year. A 2002 car could have been sold in September of '01, or was a leftover that didn't sell until November of '02. When looking at a car, ALWAYS find out the in-service date, and take that into account. That's where the 6 years start. The dealer will have that info - if they won't part with it, find another dealer. Example - if a car has 40K miles on it, but had an early in-service date, it may only have 2 years left on the CPO - you'd need to drive 30K miles a year to use it up.

There have been problems with turbos going bad - a no-hassle warranty would be a nice thing. There have been engine that died from sludge - again, and warranty is darn nice.

I would also get a Carfax on any car. It isn't perfect, but it's a start. See if it was a lease, and if so, where. Most probably it was. Warranty or not, I'd go for a low mileage car, and pay extra for it. Why? Many lease owners seem to be pretty bad at regular service, even with the free service provided on the newer cars. The fewer miles, the less damage due to missed service. And see if the dealer can provide the service record of the car - when it had oil changes, etc.

I'd think about $1200 -$1500 is reasonable for CPO. Everything is negotiable. That's why finding another dealer or three is worth the effort, if for nothing else than a bargaining chip.
