I agree with having kids own up to the consequences of their actions, so they should bear the full cost of ticket/lawyer/insurance increase. When your son or daughter is 18, they are making a transition to adulthood, and that's the way it works in the adult world.
However, I think there is more to safe driving than minding your speed. Governments typically do not share this viewpoint. They pretty much ticket for speeding and running red lights, and if you have a crash, whatever they can think of at that time. For Saab drivers, who I think tend to understand better the intracacies of safe driving, it's up to us to communicate these issues to our kids. We have had some great discussions on this issue in the past on this BB, with some good points made about what constitutes a safe driver.
When it comes to speed, I hold the opinion that 10 mph over the speed limit in a school zone is an entirely different matter than 10 mph over the limit on the highway, especially if no other cars are around. However, cops and courts don't see it this way, and I have yet to see someone stopped at or after a school zone in Madison in 10 years of living here.
So yes, take speeding seriously with your kids, but also teach them where speeding is especially dangerous, and think about all the other factors that play a role in safe driving.
