Our 33x17 inground came with our house. We didn't go looking for one, but we loved the house and accepted the pool (I should add that I spent most of my younger years lifeguarding, both pools and open water).

We inherited a couple minor problems; the pump and a valve needed to be replaced and being out in the country, and on a well, I had to get creative maintaining the water level throughout the summer. Also the deck was poured concrete on less-than-settled ground so there are a couple joints lightly out of line but it's only cosmetic and minor.

I swear by drown-proofing kids, whether they're around water or not. It's just one of those skills I consider invaluable...just in case. My three year old daughter couldn't be pulled away from the thing! So she spent a good part of our weekends there playing on the steps and being tossed around by me.

Maitenance is very easy, and cheap, once you realize you need to stay away from the pool stores as much as possible. My pool is pretty straight forward, no heater, DE filter. I chlorinate with Clorox, adjust pH with either Borax or Muriatic acid. There's much, much information at a website forum called PoolSolutions.com. It's very nearly a Saabnet for pool owners. The guy who runs it is a pool service professional who's rejected much of what the 'industry' tries to hawk and, and, like SaabNet, there are a number of other pool pros there who participate.

Would I install a pool? Depends on the depth of my pockets (not now, for sure) but don't be put off by those who slavishly worshipped at Leslie's and came away broke and broken. It's very easy to maintain once you understand it.

Shoot me an email if you want to discuss it offline if you want.

C.
