Park your car with the back facing a building or something with some detail.
Set your rear-view as you normally would.
For the side mirrors, with your head in the normal driving position look at the view behind you and adjust the sides so that there is about a 1/2 to 1" overlap of view on the sides of the rearview mirror, left and right respectively.
It is far superior to run your sideviews like everyone has posted here and it does take some getting used-to. When I switched I noticed that I had a queasy stomach for awhile while driving, almost like being seasick, because of all the new information that was being fed into my peripheral vision. Another way to describe it is similar to if you've ever sat at a red light and had large trucks on both sides pull away from you at the same time while you're sitting still--making you feel like you're rolling backwards--but that all goes away.
I lived in Northern NJ for 3 years and averaged around 35k miles/yr in that traffic and I can't overstate how much better it is to set your side view mirrors wider for driving in traffic.
