If you have the garage space and don't need it to be portable, get the biggest compressor and tank you can. (The vertical tanks work pretty good)
The more air it holds, the longer you can use it without it needing to run the motor, which can get annoying. 2-stage compressors are a little quieter and more efficient, but too expensive for my limited use. Part of my aircompressor is shown in the photo below. You may also need to buy a pressure regulator, hose, fittings, and have a dedicated electrical outlet most likely. Bigger airhose is better for long runs, as it's less restrictive in terms of pressure drop. For daily use, it's good to have a drier and oiler inline for the benefit of the tools.
Buy extra fittings or at least keep the packaging, as there are several different systems that look almost identical and memory isn't good enough an aid when shopping for additional fittings when you get more tools later.
I like air for using an impact wrench to remove wheel lugs, chuck for inflating tires, blower for dusting/cleaning, air drill for small drilling (works great on wood, as the exhaust air removes the shavings nicely), and an air powered orbital sander. Next is probably a rachet of some sort. Nothing against electric tools, but I never seem to have enough extension cords around for all my tools at the same time, and I don't want to be tripping on a power strip. When working on a wood project, I can have the electric drill with a screwdriver bit for fasteners, and the air drill with a drill for countersinking or pilot holes.
