I can usually point myself in the right direction, but one missed or wrong turn and then you're in some endless knot of streets lined with triple-deckers, all the houses look the same, all the streets are one way or dead end or do not enter or no left turn...then I'll find myself in Inman Square or something and voila, it's a new shortcut.
We tried to get my brother in law from S-ville to Cambridge, and we told him to get on McGrath and just "look for the signs." Ha. Naively, he believed us; he ended up in Natick, and later explained that he'd never been so lost in his life. I felt kinda bad for him, but I had to laugh. Natick? Which sign did he follow??
When I give people directions to my house, one of the final steps is, "See that sign that says No Right Turn? Make that right. No, really, it's OK." But it's easier to get people here via the illegal right than the "real" way, which involves a complicated lane change, a three-way intersection, and a street sign that's angled as to be basically invisible from the road.
