Just an idea, but it sounds like you swapped the ram from your computer to this one. Maybe some static electricity zapped all or part of the ram. Maybe there is some compatibility issue. I don’t know if there is any software that can test this. Maybe something listed under Scott’s ram post can be of use.
You might also be having some odd install issues. You could try clean installing again. I had some trouble with a Dell P3 and Win Me where I would have low available resources. Dell never figured it out and I sent the machine back. Have you tested the hard drive? Is there some reason your workplace got rid of this machine? Maybe they were experiencing similar problems. Why don’t you just put the better graphics card in your machine that worked and swap the power buttons?
Do you have all the Win98 updates?
Do people actually buy OS software for personal use? I guess I have been a student too long with access to educational and pirated software. I know every work computer I have ever used has felt like it was from the stone age.
