I've shot 35mm and had a Pentax 645. I've spent thousands on film, darkroom equipment, etc. In the end, I spent less on digital photography and have way more results. I can do things with my Canon 20D that I could never imaging doing with film. Case in point, I shot a Christmas party for a school in a low light hall. I still wanted to show ambient light, so with my Canon 20D I was able to shoot at ISO1600 with 580EX Flash and still get smooth printable pictures with acceptable grain (i.e. noise). If I used film at ISO 1600, I couldn't sell it. Also the ability to shoot RAW and post process RAW images makes color balancing the images very easy. It was a pain printing color photos from my darkroom equipment. I've waited 10 years for this technology to come and $1300 for a camera of this capability is reasonable for me. Note that Nikon announced that they will no longer sell film cameras except for the high end F5s.
