actually, i find downshifting easier than upshifting. ease off the throttle to neutral throttle (not accelerating or decellerating) and lever slides right out of gear. blip it good (rev it up) and s l i d e it into gear while revs are still up. it helps to not totally release the throttle so the revs drop slower.
gentle
it does help if the tranny is a bit worn, but i've done it on almost every stick car i've driven in the last 15 years. (often without realizing it)
if you have perfect pitch (i don't) you're golden. the pitch change is the same for every gear pair. pitch obviously changes with rpm, but the percentage drop or rise is always the same with each pair. listen to the pitch change of the engine when you shift. if you can duplicate that, you don't need the clutch.
comes in handy when the slave dies (or the clutch cable on an old vw bus breaks) and you need to drive home. in that case, turn the engine off at traffic lights, keep it in first, when light changes start the engine. it's a little chuggy/jerky, but hey, it saves a tow.
when you don't quite get it right, it makes a bad noise but doesn't hurt anything if you don't jam it. wince, apologize to the car, and try again.
google about 'doubleclutching'. the secret is, you don't need the clutch to do it.
