Just as there are possible differences between service stations selling the same brand of gasoline.
The basic trouble is that the layman has very little data to be able to tell what those differences are and how important the differences might be.
While most raw gasoline stock is quite similar, the various brands also include additives that can make one brand significantly different than another brand. See the link to "top tier gasoline" for one attempt to quantify the cleaning ability of various brands of gasoline.
Also don't forget to add the unknown aspect of the general maintenance and cleanliness of individual stations and their respective storage tanks. The best gasoline product can be ruined when sediment, water, or cross grade contamination is introduced at the service station.
