If you don't want to go far and don't mind a little hill it's a good day trip place. Not a ton of terrain but a good deal. For you coming out of Boston Sunapee is a great bet. They have about 55 trails open at the moment and it's run by the Okemo company and they do a fine job grooming. Ski/ride the Sun Bowl area for fewer crowds.
Coming out of Boston, Sunapee and Crotched are probably about the same for drive time. Sunapee is more $ but it's lots bigger. The other thing you could do, Pete, is go to Loon or Waterville on I-93 or even Tenney (Exit 25 I think). All under 2 hours from Boston.
Crotched re-opened 3 years ago with a $12+ million investment. All new lifts, snowmaking, etc. Mostly locals go there, but I see more and more MA plates every time I go (almost every Sat and Sun AM).
It is NEVER crowded--almost like having your own private area. Ski into the chair is commmon. Small hill means lots of runs.
