things with NiCad battery packs that go dead

I have started rebuilding battery packs myself. Many of the battery packs appear to be made with cells that do not stand up and self discharge rather quickly. I an using Sanyo Cadnica cells as these seem to last. I had a rechargable razor with Sanyo cells that ran for over 15 years and worked when I tossed it to get a better razor. I had a Craftsman 12V drill have cells fail, some dead shorted out. So I had Batteries Plus rebuild it. It would not hold a charge after a few years. Opened it up and 5 out of 10 of there no-name cells were shorted out. Battery pack for Roomba did not have shorted cells, but became resistive. When charged, a 50 watt load dropped the voltage to 7 volts, but the load would have been 50 watts if the voltage stayed at 12. Replaced those cells and the battery charges faster and works very well.
I do not want to get factory replacement packs as I feel that they are getting the lowest bid, not proper quality. All they worry about is getting past their one year warranty.
So that was a lot of rambling. So something to consider. You need to get cells with soldering tabs. Some suppliers will join cells together into rods or bricks with spot welded strips for a reasonable price. Some battery packs open easily, some are welded and need to be cracked, some have security screws that annoy.
