NOT A LUBRICANT!

I'm an aircraft flight controls design engineer, so lubrication is pretty important to my work. WD40 is NOT A LUBRICANT! Every time someone in our shop uses it to get rid of a little squeak, they end up causing more trouble than they solve.
The real trouble comes if you use it to lube something that already has some lube on it. The WD usually breaks down whatever was already there and washes it away. Even worse is if the original lube was dry or powdered. Then the WD just creates a sludge of goo with no lube properties at all, and you have to disassemble and clean the whole mechanism to get it right again.
Any silicone based lube spray is a much better alternative for those around the house lube jobs (door hinges and such). Others here have mentioned some of the specialty lube sprays that do a very good job as well.
Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now. :)
