...having an involved conversation with a passenger, or two or three. If you look at distractions, one could make the argument that an insane aftermarket stereo system is just as troublesome. Same with eating or drinking in your car (my Saab doesn't have cupholders, good for me!)
Anything you do while you drive will take away from your concentration... not just handsfree cellphones. I use bluetooth with voice recog that takes less effort and concentration to use than putting a CD in my player, and singing along.
Back to the passenger thing, I'd say a conversation with a friend is actually MORE distracting because this is in person... you will look at the person, and interact with them in ways that would distract you more than if you were on the phone. Maybe we should make all cars horse-drawn carriage style, with the driver separate from the passengers?
