This is what concerns me more than the outdated fuse box. If the electrical hasn’t been upgraded I’d like to know what problems might be lurking behind the walls. The home does have a newer gas furnace, a/c, roof, water heater and it’s been tuck pointed recently. Our agent is looking into what has been done with the electrical or if there are any plans to upgrade it before the home sale. She believes the current code would force them to install breakers. They had an estate sale a day or two after we viewed the home so I'm guessing Grandma moved into a nursing home or she's not with us any longer. The family may not be familiar with the current condition of the home.
I just wish I could figure out why my wife likes these homes that Grandma has lived in and need a lot of renovation. There's an 1898 farm house not to far from this one that she also liked (it had updated electrical). Two women had lived in it for 50 years, but one started having difficultly getting up and down the stairs. I was able to talk her out of it since it only the only bathroom was on the second floor and there was no garage for the Saab. There wasn’t any room on the property to add a garage. I thought we had decided on a 3/1 ranch (1955 home) that had lots of updates. The kitchen was small and pink, but nothing a new countertop and paint wouldn’t fix. Her mom convinced her that a home without an eat-in kitchen and no formal dining room (combo w/ living room) wasn’t worth living in.
It shouldn’t surprise me that we can’t agree on the same home. It took us 3 days to pick out a china pattern for our wedding registry and 2 days in Hickory, NC to decide on furniture for the living room. We decided on a style before making the trip to NC, but once faced with the different choices we couldn’t agree. I was shocked when we were able to decide on a bedroom set in about 3 hours.
Thanks to all for the input. It's appreciated.
