Late 1970's, public high school in Oklahoma. We had daily classroom instruction, with rules of the road, viewing ghastly films, and time in the drive-o-trainer. This device allowed us to experience deadly situations in the simulator, such as a truck veering into our lane. We were taught to scan our mirrors continuously, so that when the bad thing happened, we would make the right move and now mow down the little girl on the bicycle at the side of the road, etc.
We would go out driving once a week for the whole semester. One of the instructors was particularly good and, it seemed if the student was up to it, would find interesting and challenging situations.
My driving test lasted about 20 minutes, including parallel parking city streets of various kinds, multiple lane changes, mixing with traffic.
Then my dad also taught me. He emphasized, in addition to precision, smoothness. So I think that I got from the classroom an awareness of traffic situations and knowledge of how to respond to threats, and from my dad the techniques of operating the machine itself.
Nowadays, budget cuts have dealt a major blow to driver training. It's up to the parents to make sure the kid gets what they need.
One word about driving age, while I'm standing on the soap box. You have to learn some time, and I'm not sure that judgement is much better at 17 than at 16. The later you learn, the harder it is to learn. My wife started driving on a regular basis at 22, and there are aspects of her driving that she will never really master. She doesn't know I think so, however. Just as well.
