The official rule is that if the package is more than 16 oz. you must go to the post office (so they can put it in the mailbox). If it's under 16 ox. but not a small box, it's technically legal but some postal employees don't understand the rules.
Don't be a terrorist and just go to the post office.
This is not to pick on postal employees. In the UK, they have it hard. People dump used needles into the letter boxes. In fact, there are warning labels to remind employees when they open the mailbox to collect letters. Hey! Stop it!
