This was for my now completed Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry. Just myself and 3 professors in a room with no clock where they asked questions for as long as they wanted. Fortunately I plied them with sweet snacks and scheduled it for 3pm on a Friday afternoon so they were done with me after an hour! Still spend ages upon ages studying and reading and working on my thesis proposal, in the end it was anticlimactic... but also sounds a lot easier than yours.

Chemistry is an odd field though. The area it covers are so wildly divergent we have a hard time simply talking to one another, let alone academically mastering all the subdisciplines. Good luck with it, I'm sure you will pass... if not this time then next.
